ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
Chandbali College, Chandbali, Established in 1979, is a premier institution in Bhadrak district of Odisha run by the Higher Education Department, Govt. of Odisha. Department of English was affiliated to Utkal University, Vanivihar, and subsequently came to the fold of F.M. University, Vyasavihar, Balasore in the year 1998. Since its inception the mission of the department is to train the students in the light of becoming noble citizens and developing global competence and the skills necessary for being successful in life.
In conformity with the vision and mission of Chandbali College, Chandbali the Department of English concentrates its main thrust on improving curriculum in English and ensuring the quality of English teaching and learning at all levels .The department strives to make the teaching of English students-centric. The courses of various UG classes, especially English as a compulsory subject, are developed, updated and reviewed by the prescribed guidelines of F.M. University and the teachers of the English Department of the college. For better performance in teaching of Honours courses the students and the teachers meet regularly in the department and after thorough deliberation recommendations for a better system of teaching and learning process are accepted. The lecture method is predominantly used providing sufficient time for interaction. However, there is provision of the use of audio-visual aids for the student. The local, national and global needs are always kept in view.
As the college belongs to a very economically backward region of the state of Odisha, the students hail from poor families. They fail to get proper coaching in English at High School level and lack in ICT facility required for updation of knowledge in English. Most of the students happen to be girl students. Keeping in view the above background of the students English department arranges Remedial and Spoken English classes for such students. The departmental library provides text books and reference books to the students who opt for English Honours. The department also encourages the students to avail the Internet facility for downloading their study materials as and when necessary. Evaluation system is based strictly as per the guidelines of the University and the recommendations of the Academic Council of the College. Feedback from the students is encouraged for a healthy and meaningful teaching-learning process. The teachers of English department function as counsellors and mentors for the students. All the faculty members of the department believe that teaching and research in higher education are compatible to each other. The quality of higher education can be maintained if research activities are encouraged. The teachers of the department have already engaged themselves in research work. Prof. N.C.Pattanyak and R.C. Pati have registered themselves as Ph.D. scholars under F.M. University. A National Seminar on ‘Myth and Mysticism in Indian English poetry’ sponsored by UGC has already been organized in the session 2011-12.Eminent Professors like Dr G. Behera from Banaras Hindu University, Dr Suvendu Mund from Culture University Bhubaneswar, Dr G.B.Sahoo from Bhadrak Autonomous College have graced the seminars as esteemed speakers. Eminent guest faculties from different colleges are also invited to share their seminal views with the students and teachers of the department.
In spite of all effort to bring about a qualitative change in the attitude of the students towards the learning of English language and literature the department is yet to get a bright response from the students joining the different courses of the college. After a sincere and thorough probe in this area with the help of the long standing experience of the faculty members of the department it is revealed that the students suffer from a kind of psychological fear and pressure for the learning of English from their primary to high school level of education. However the department has been trying to create a congenial ambience for developing interest in the students for English language and literature.
